THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE NEVER
DID RUN SMOOTH, PART 9
On October 1, 1955, The Honeymooners premiered as a weekly thirty-minute series featuring what would become one of television’s greatest couples. Jackie Gleason played Ralph Kramden, a gruff but lovable bus driver, and Audrey Meadows played his long-suffering, sarcastic wife, Alice. In spite of all their money problems, drab apartment, and Ralph’s endless series of hopeless get-rich-quick schemes and empty threats (“One of these days, Alice, POW, right in the kisser!”), they stood by each other through thick and thin.
“I don’t think I’ll get married again. I’ll just find a woman I don’t like and give her a house.”
—HUMORIST LEWIS GRIZZARD
“All mankind love a lover.”
