THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE NEVER
DID RUN SMOOTH, PART 11
In order to marry a commoner named Anne Boleyn, England’s Henry VIII divorced his wife, the Spanish-born princess Catherine of Aragon; scandalized Europe; became furious with the Pope when he refused to grant him an annulment; broke with the Roman Catholic Church; and created the Church of England. But after all that, when Anne couldn’t produce a male heir, Henry had her executed on trumped-up charges. (Ironically, before Anne was beheaded, she gave birth to a girl who would become one of England’s greatest monarchs, Elizabeth I.)

PILGRIMS IN LOVE
Every year around Thanksgiving, American schoolchildren learn the following tale of love and courtship in the Plymouth Colony: The shy widower Miles Standish asks his friend John Alden to propose marriage on his behalf to the lovely Priscilla Mullins. But Priscilla likes the quiet Alden more, so her response to the surrogate proposal is, "Speak for yourself, John Alden." The story comes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s immensely popular poem 'The Courtship of Miles Standish.' All we know for sure about this famous love triangle is that Priscilla married John Alden, probably before 1623; Standish remarried in 1623 or 1624; and the Aldens had two children by 1627. No wonder Longfellow turned to old family legends and his own imagination to create one of the great American love stories.
